Leslie doesn’t antique; she steals things from old people.

Instead of writing something original (which I should really get back in the habit of doing), I’m going to tell you about one of my favorite people. Her name is Leslie, and she recently started a blog. This is a picture of us having a pizza eating contest (she beat me, and never lets me forget it):

Leslie and I met at a camp I was working at. A fun fact about Leslie is that she doesn’t antique; she steals things from old people’s houses. This is really what I want to bring to your attention (and that I haven’t seen you in forever, Leslie, and we should remedy that somehow!), and you can read about it here:

Celebrity Pastors Make Ministry Hard For the Rest of Us

images

I just read a great post by Steve Hall, over at his blog, entitled, “strange negotiations: an open letter to everyone.” Steve’s complaint is that celebrity pastor’s, with their tweets and blogs and videos and what-not, muddy the water by making such huge waves. They take on issues and each other’s issues in such a public way that it leaves him always doing damage control instead of ministry. Here’s an exert:

But here’s the problem, boys. My people read what you write. They listen to what you say. They track your tweets. What may take you a matter of minutes or hours to post–a controversial video clip, a dismissive tweet, or a fear-mongering blog–takes me months of sidetracking discussion, confusion, and chaos. You’re creating dissension and dischord in the body, a trait which is much more akin to the false teachers noted in Scripture than any of the theological musings you so obstreperously condemn.

It’s totally worth the read. Go check it out here: strange negotiations: an open letter to everyone

Dunbar’s Number, or Your Brain Is Telling You That You Can’t Do It Alone

"Dunbar's Number"

I wrote an article for ProductiveMinistry.com this week. And, because re-posting it here won’t get them any traffic, I’ll give you only a teaser. You’ll need to visit them for the full article.

In January, I accepted a position as the new Director of Student Ministries at FUMC Rowlett. The week before starting, a friend and I sat down to make a big list of all the things I would need to do or find out in first few weeks. Among the many things that appeared on this list was a simple question: “What is your home number?”

Are You A Hired Servant?

Re-posted from one of my favorite blogs, Productive Ministry dot com:

In his sermon on the mount, Jesus tells us,” blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth.” So many that I have worked with in the church fake meekness. They do this by putting on the mask of the servant, and busying themselves with mundane tasks of ministry. And for them it is great at first. People notice that they are always the first ones on the scene; ready to mop, or cook, or teach. And they say to them, “Thank you, it is so great that you have such a servants heart!” or “You! What would we do without you? Thank God that you are here!” And these servants love the attention, and it inspires them to work harder, to serve more, and they are happy.

What happens if you work hard and nobody says thank you. What happens when you do your best and you are hated? What about when people start abusing you and barking orders at you, and complaining about everything that you do? What happens when those you have loved the most leave the church because they say no one cared for them? How will you feel, when you have loved them with everything that you have and they complain to your senior minster, or to your elders. Will you continue you to love them and to serve them?
